Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 18, 2026

1. Who Anchor is for, and our approach to privacy

Anchor is a private, supportive space for people caring for someone struggling with addiction: the supporter, not the person in active addiction. Because the people who use Anchor are often in sensitive personal situations, we designed the app to collect as little as possible and to keep your most personal information on your own device.

Two principles guide everything below:

2. Information we collect

a) Your email address (for signing in). Anchor uses passwordless sign-in: you enter your email and we send a one-time code to verify it's you. We store your email to maintain your account. We do not collect or require a phone number, and we do not use passwords.

b) Content you create: stored on your device. Your check-ins and private journal notes are stored on your device, in the app's local storage. Your crisis contacts are stored using your device's secure, encrypted storage. By default, this information does not leave your phone and we cannot see it.

c) Optional cloud backup (off by default). If you choose to turn on cloud backup, a copy of your synced content is uploaded to our backend provider (Supabase) so you can back it up and export it. This is opt-in: if you never turn it on, nothing is uploaded. Your crisis contacts are never uploaded, even with backup on. Cloud data is stored in the United States (region: us-east-2), regardless of where you are physically located when you use the app (see Section 6 on international transfers).

d) Your anonymous handle (for community Circles). If you use Circles to connect with others, you appear under a private handle you choose. We recommend choosing a nickname rather than your real name, and the app is designed to encourage this. Posts you make in Circles are associated with that handle, not your identity.

e) Diagnostics and analytics: no personal content. To keep the app working and understand how features are used, we collect:

You can turn usage analytics (Mixpanel) off at any time in Settings → “Share anonymous usage data.” Crash reporting (Sentry) is not covered by that toggle and continues to run, so we can find and fix problems — but crash reports never include your journal entries, contacts, or messages; they carry only an anonymous identifier and technical diagnostics.

f) What we do NOT collect. No real name, no location, no phone number, and no advertising identifier. We never read your photos or files: the app only creates files you ask it to (such as a data export or therapist summary) and hands them to your device's share sheet. We access your contacts only if you choose to add a crisis contact, and we never upload your contacts. We do not sell data and we do not share it with advertisers.

3. How we use information

We use the limited information above to: provide and maintain the app; sign you in; back up and export your data if you turn that on; enable Circles; keep the app stable and secure (crash diagnostics); understand aggregate feature usage; and respond to your support requests. We do not use your information for advertising or profiling.

4. Legal bases (for users in the EU/UK)

Where the UK/EU GDPR applies, we rely on: performance of a contract (to provide the app and your account), consent (optional cloud backup and optional analytics, which you can withdraw at any time), and legitimate interests (keeping the app secure and functioning).

5. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing.

We use a small number of service providers (“processors”) who handle data only on our behalf and under contract:

We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety or rights of users or the public, consistent with applicable law.

6. Where your data is stored, and international transfers

If you use Anchor from outside these regions (for example, from the EU/UK), your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States. Where required, such transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses with our providers.

7. How long we keep information

8. Your choices and rights

9. Security

We protect your information with encryption in transit (TLS) and with platform security controls. Account and synced data are held by Supabase with encryption at rest. On-device secrets (such as your session and crisis contacts) are stored using your device's secure storage. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and to minimize what we hold in the first place.

10. Not a crisis or medical service

Anchor is a supportive tool. It is not a medical device, medical advice, therapy, or an emergency service. If you or someone else is in danger or crisis, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line. In the U.S., call 911 for an emergency, or call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). The app surfaces crisis resources for convenience, but it is not a substitute for professional help.

11. Children

Anchor is intended for adults (18+) and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
